Traditional Birthday Songs

Birthdays are great occasions to celebrate life and think about our blessings. They bring great joy to children and parents alike. We are lucky to celebrate two birthdays each year – one, on our English date of birth and the other according to our Nakshatra (‘star’). It is only fitting that we also learn some birthday songs available in our tradition apart from singing ‘Happy Birthday to you!’. In fact, our traditional songs are more meaningful and full of blessings which enliven our kids’ lives.

Below are a couple of traditional birthday songs:

The first one is from Balbharati.  The purpose of Balbharati is to promote moral and social values among our children and to make them aware of our cultural and national heritage. This beautiful song is written in Sanskrit and has a very nice tune to it.

जन्मदिनमिदं अयि प्रियसखे | शन्तनो तु ते सर्वदा मुदम ||
प्रार्थयामहे भव शतायुषी | ईश्वर:सदा त्वां च रक्षतु ||

O Dear friend, may this birthday bring you auspiciousness and joy forever!

The second song is in Tamil and is written by poet Arivumathi. I understand this song is already sung in many schools currently.  Listen to it once and you will never stop listening to it!
